I just had my first gynecologist visit since being diagnosed with breast cancer. My gynecologist was the one who told me that the recommendations for the age of your first mammogram had changed, and she said for me to go ahead and schedule it. Little did she or I know, I had two separate cancers cooking up, one in each breast. That was the start of a whirlwind, emotional, stressful journey for the following year, but I am also so very lucky that the cancers were caught when they were. She was instrumental in saving my life and keeping me from needing chemo or radiation because the cancers were caught so quickly. I brought her flowers to thank her for her part, and I will never see a different gynecologist as long as she is in this office. Ladies. When your health specialists talk, LISTEN. There is a reason that the recommended age for your first mammogram changed from 45 to 40. I am a PRIME example of why. I had no family history and my genetic testing revealed absolutely no predisposition for breast or a number of other cancers. If I had waited until 45 years old to get my first mammogram, where would I be right now? BOTH cancers were already INVASIVE when they were discovered at 40 years old. At 45 they could have spread to other parts of the body. Please, please, please get checked regularly, and do it when your health professional says you should. It can absolutely save your life. 🩷
Also if you are looking for a phenomenal gynecologist that is super sweet and will put you at ease, go see Heather Henderson at Carrollton OB/GYN. She is a Godsend.

I could not be happier about this tattoo! @datboinoah at @inkrushtat2 did an amazing job and was so patient and kind. He made sure that I was happy and comfortable with the design and the placement. He understood the significance of the symbolism in my design and helped me find ways to include every part that I wanted. This tattoo is just for me and is so meaningful after everything I`ve been through in the last 6 months 🩷 Thanks again Noah! I am in love with it!

At my first OBGYN appointment after I turned 40 years old, my doctor let me know that the recommended age to get your first mammogram had been moved back to 40 rather than 45. She said that I should go ahead and schedule an appointment to get everything checked out. Little did either of us know, I would be a changed person physically, mentally, and emotionally when I came back for my next annual visit.
On my first ever mammogram, there were things that the radiologist wanted to get a closer look at. The very first one of my life! Bear in mind, I have virtually no family history of breast cancer. This was never anything that even blipped on my radar. For me, it was just another routine maintenance appointment. Just check that off the list ✅ and move on. Imagine my surprise when it wasn`t a "just do it" item.
Guys, there is a reason that the recommendation was moved back to 40. I am a perfect example of that reason. If I had waited until 45 to get checked, there is no telling how different my life would be right now. It is so important.

Hi! I`m so glad you found me! Let me tell you a little bit about myself and my journey through life so far. I am a 40 year old wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. I have a super supportive husband Patrick, and two amazing sons Travis (20) and Jaxon (8). I work full time as an assistant manager at a bank, and I craft as a hobby, mostly crochet. My family loves to travel, and I also contribute to making beautiful music with our local community wind ensemble by playing the clarinet.
I decided to begin my blog after getting well into my journey with breast cancer. My main focus is to help educate and bring awareness to the importance of early detection. I promise you, I am the poster child for why it is so VERY important. However, I don`t want my story or my life to completely revolve around that. There is much more to me than my cancer experience, so I intend to write about a variety of things. You may see posts about my crafting hobby. You may see posts about travel. You may see posts about music, parenting, outdoor activities, and more.
I`d also like for this to become a conversation over time. Please ask me questions. I am not shy about sharing any part of my experience. If I can help just one person through their own journey, or inspire one person to get their mammogram at their recommended age, I will consider my blog successful in it`s purpose.

Hoping we meet again,

WELCOME!
My name is Rachel, and I am the author of this blog.
I am a 42 year old wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. I work full time as an assistant manager at a bank, and I craft as a hobby, mostly crochet. My family loves to travel, and I also contribute to making beautiful music with our local community wind ensemble by playing the clarinet. Most importantly for the purposes of this blog, I have journeyed through breast cancer, and I am a strong supporter of early detection because of my experience.
